Poker is a card game that combines elements of chance and skill. The main objective of the game is to create the best hand possible. This can be done by having the highest possible combination of cards. There are several variants of poker, each with its own rules. But the basic rules remain the same.

Before the cards are dealt, all players must make an ante. An ante is a small amount of money they are required to put into the pot. It is usually one dollar or five dollars.

The ante provides the pot with a value and also gives the other players a reason to call the bet. Players must then decide whether to raise or fold. If they do, they will have five cards in their hands.

Ties are broken by a high card, which is a card of higher rank than the last. When two or more people have the same high card, a pair is formed. A straight is a series of four or more consecutive cards of the same suit.

Poker tells can be big when played correctly. For instance, a player with a strong statistical lead can backdoor a flush by hitting their needed cards on the turn and river.

There are some poker games with additional Wild Cards. These take any suit. You may also see a side pot, which is created from extra money bet by the remaining players.

A bluff is a play that is meant to scare off other players. It is a tactic that is used by many inexperienced players.
