Relationships – What Are They?

Relationships

Relationships are the associations and connections between people. They may be interpersonal, platonic or romantic. Generally, relationships are defined by limerence (love, care, loyalty) and social commitments.

Term Definition: Interpersonal relationship – association between two or more people; this association can be based on limerence, love, solidarity, regular business interactions, or some other type of social commitment.

Sex is often considered to be an important aspect of intimate relationships, but it doesn’t have to be. Having physical intimacy in a healthy relationship can include kissing, hugging, cuddling, and sleeping together.

Commitment and communication are also key to a strong relationship. They help you set boundaries, solve problems, express feelings, and more.

Honesty is another essential element of any relationship. Telling lies or hiding the truth can destroy a relationship and lead to toxic behaviors.

A healthy relationship is one in which you have a strong sense of trust and are emotionally supported by your partner. This support makes it easier to take risks and grow as a person.

Family and friends are often involved in your relationship, too. They can encourage you to be a better person and help you decompress when you’re going through a tough time or if your loved one is struggling with their own health.

Research shows that having social ties can add years to your life and increase your chances of longevity. So, cultivate some close relationships in your life to reap these benefits.
